Simon Yates wins 2018 Vuelta a Espana

Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) conquered his third bunch sprint victory of the Vuelta a Espaņa in Madrid on Sunday, whilst Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished safely in the main pack to capture his first ever Grand Tour. The Italian National Champion lost his lead-out train with around two kilometres to go but was still able to stay calm and launch a ferocious late acceleration that netted Viviani his 18th win of 2018 and seventh Grand Tour stage of the season. Giorgia Bronzini (Cylance) won stage 2 of the Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta. Part of a strong breakaway of nineteen riders that got away in the second half of the 100.3km race, and made it to the end, the former world champion outsprinted Sarah Roy (Mitchelton-Scott) and Charlotte Becker (Hitec Products-Birk Sport) to take the victory in her final race. Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) continued his incredible season with overall victory in the Tour of Slovakia on Sunday. The Frenchman, who won two stages and the king of the mountains competition at the Tour de France earlier in the summer, finished 16 seconds ahead of Jan Tratnik (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), while Cesare Benedetti (BORA - hansgrohe) rounded out the podium, finishing a further six seconds down.
